1. play with the option in a local repository, to get a feeling how it
is working, and
2. backup the repository before doing it! Also, make sure noone can make
commits until you have done it and tested it thoroughly!
so, especially when thinking about the ways it can (severely!) go wrong.

All in all, I suggest you leave things the way they are unless there
were never any commits on the branch.
I wholeheartedly agree. In most cases, it is not worth the effort to dowere never any commits on the branch.
so, especially when thinking about the ways it can (severely!) go wrong.
