Although I replied privately to Arthur I'd like to post the resolution
to the general list.

It turns out that this error is triggered when the server is in a
low-memory situation. Something was screwed up on our box and we have
almost run out of swap space. As soon as we resolved that this problem
went away.

'cvs update' has started failing with the above error. Can someone
tell me what this means and what I can do about it?
